PC for Everything is a peculiar exhibition that brings together the renowned artists Angel Ramírez and Luis Cabrera in Villa Manuela Gallery at the Association of Writers and Artists of Cuba. When reviewing their art careers and opening an existing file we discover numerous characteristics akin to them, since they have known each other from the days when they both studied at San Alejandro Academy back in 1970, they coincided in the specialty of engraving at the National School of Art and the Higher Institute of Art, they are used to working in group workshops, they store a rich, unprejudiced graphic experience by using the different technical resources, they have already worked jointly with other artists and they possess a database loaded with humor, satire and irony that can be easily appreciated in their works, which grants them a peculiar popular style.
After a preliminary overview of this data we understand why a true integration of the works has been achieved in spite of the geographical distance existing at present between the authors and their different forms of expression, although they both face the work from a common server. If Angel has appropriated very strong and symbolical medieval references, granting them a contemporary concept in their content, Luis takes what the world of graphic design offers him and what he had stored from the comic pure colors, simplification of rounded forms with strong lines but the point of insertion is the common use of daily life materials and waste products that they both use to create their works.
Towels, carpets, bed sheets, among other objects, are used with real ability for the treatment of textures in Luis Cabrera’s digital works, and waste materials and recyclable of objects of all kinds and conditions skillfully elaborated to enable their transformation is what Angel Ramirez calls trash in his works.
To change the meaning of what has been achieved, to place the motifs in context with the terminology of informatics that invades our language is one of the ways in which the works mutually support each other, but the most valid aspect of this experience is that both the individual works and those made jointly maintain the personal characteristics of both authors; there is no submission or subordination in the treatment of the contents, there is a perfect integration in a work whose only change will be the double signature, which will allow the artists to create new icons in our PC according to the artists’ interest, and go back to them to enjoy them with a simple and unique click.
