He has faced his work of the last 20 years as a research process that has gradually developed and revealed itself through projects reflecting on different themes, starting by the processes of creating culture, like, for example, the project Occidente Tropical (Tropical West), where the eclectic and syncretic essence of the Cuban socio-cultural context was the starting point of each work.
Mística del Resguardo y la Gozadera (Mystic of Protection and Pleasure) emphasizes on eroticism mixed with political and religious fetishes that have influenced in that same creation of culture. Up to this point, the work parted from very contextual reflections, to evolve toward concerns proper of the human being, going through projects such as Los Secretos (The Secrets), Sobre cómo aprendió a caminar la Tierra (On How the Earth Learned to Walk), Habanos Libres (Free Habanos), Cacería (Hunting Party), No todo lo que vuela se come (Not All That Flies is Edible). Or like in the most recent project Submarino hecho en casa (Home-made Submarine), where basically he designs personalized prototypes of hybrids of Russian submarines and U.S. cars.
Esterio defines his work as follows: “My work is my philosophy of life, which I practice thoroughly: to transcend any space, culture or history, avoiding clinging to any specific aesthetics or representation. Every object of reflection runs the risk of becoming a work of art”.
